Propeller Airplane

Image of a Brackitz propeller airplane

A propeller as a spinning wing that produces lift, but in a forward direction—better known as thrust. A difference in air pressure between the front and back surfaces of its blades while it is moving causes lift.  Propeller airplanes need help from an engine.  Here is a great article all about propeller planes from the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum.

Questions to Inspire

  • Who created the first airplane?  When?  Why? (Here is a link to the history of airplanes)
  • How is a propeller plane like a jet airplane?  How are they different? (here is al link)
  • Write a story about a plane trip that you took (or draw a picture if the child is pre-literate)
